Event Title: A Way to Wellness: An Accessible Lifestyle Change Program in Cleveland County
Event Date: Mon, March 10th
Event Time: 12:00-1:00 PM
Location: Zoom (link provided in registration confirmation)
Abstract:
- Background: Chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease are the most common and costly health concerns for Oklahoma. Heart disease is the leading cause of death, accounting for 1 in 4 deaths. Diabetes is the most expensive medical condition costing Oklahoman's an average of $3.7 billion annually.
- Objective: The Chronic Disease Prevention Services with the Oklahoma State Department of Health developed A Way to Wellness to uniquely meet the needs of Oklahomans with an 8-week interactive class to help participants learn how to make sustainable healthy changes in their lives. This program was piloted in the Spring of 2024 in collaboration with the Community Engagement team from the Cleveland County Health Department. Goals were identified as making changes to improve health, 150 minutes of physical activity, and encouraging participants to lose 3 to 5% of their body weight.
- Methods: Habit Trackers were designed for daily collection of food and water intake, mood, physical activity, and sleep. Additionally, pre and post screenings were compared for cholesterol levels and the body composition scale.
- Results: Findings overwhelmingly indicate the program's success with 50% of participants improving total cholesterol by 5%, and 29% improving their HDL cholesterol by 3%.
- Conclusions: Results demonstrate that A Way to Wellness had a tremendous impact on improving health and wellness among participants. All participants reported agency in managing health goals and making healthy eating changes. The habits built in this program can help prevent and manage chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
